Eze Onyekpere presages Buhari about the country's financial abate

Eze Onyekpere portents Buhari, that there’s no time for fun and something has to be done with financial sector instantly. Muhammadu Buhari should appoint finance minister immediately as deteriorating Nigerian economy needs something to be done to fix the unproductivity. This opinion was voiced by the head of the Centre for Social Justice Eze Onyekpere, who also thinks that the economy can’t wait till September, as the consequences of the previous mismanagement and bungling are growing every day, while naira’s exchange rate is deteriorating on the daily basis.

“The fact that has been repeatedly stated by a few officials of the new government is that there is a lot of work to be done to clean the misdeeds of the past”, he told the press. As naira’s rate is falling by the day, stocks are constantly losing their value, which doesn’t add good perceptions for investments.

Eze Onyekpere also added that there’s strange intrigue around Nigeria’s finance as the last budget implementation report published was for the second quarter of 2014. The general public hasn’t been informed on the implementation of the 2015 budget. And nobody seems to care about carrying out the preparation process of the 2016-2018 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and planning the 2016 budget. Report just reaching us indicates that there’s plan by NNPC to increase the pump price of PMS to N165 from N145.Baring last minute change of plan, the new pump price shall be announced in less than 10 days from now. The federal Government had in May, when subsidy was officially removed, fastened the ceiling for PMS at N145. According to one source: “Okay now let’s do the logistics behind my clams PMS is been sold for 145 rights? Good, but marketers buy drafts at 133 per litre. Loading expenses will land you around 138 – 140 hence filing stations sell at 143 – 145. This morning 20 Naira was added by NNPC on drafts which lands at 153. So expect your Pms to be sold at #165.” According to bases, the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), decided to increase the ex-depot price to 135 Naira per litre with effect from Monday (Today), after the last consignment of about 17,000MT capacity imported vessel arrives Lagos last week. It was assembled that following foreign exchange crisis, which makes it difficult for the private marketers to access foreign exchange at the official price, the PPMC assumed the sole importer of kerosene, thus leading to the scarcity of the product. It was also learnt that the public who are the end users would not be losing much as the product had always sold above the 83 N aira official price because of racketeering by officials of PPMC and the marketers.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has commended politicians contesting various positions in the forth-coming August 11 general elections in Zambia to accept results of the polls and avoid ferocity. In a declaration issued by his media aide, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, Dr. Jonathan appealed to political party leaders to endeavor to place the country’s interest over political ambitions. He was quoted as saying, “Politicians going in for elective positions should be open-minded about the outcome, because they can either win or lose. Politicians who want to play meaningful and friendly roles in governance should realize or grasp that it is not about them. Those who care only about themselves should quit politics and begin to accomplish personal businesses. “Our states are not private enterprises. You cannot be interested in governance without sufficient interest in the affairs of the people. So the interest of the country should come first as politicians tick their priority boxes. “This also requires politicians to accept the outcome of genuine elections and adhere to it because of the interest of the people. You cannot activate violence or crash and mayhem on the one hand and pretend that you are fighting for the people on the other. It does not make any sense to get involved in bloodshed, destroy properties, frustrate businesses and collapse the economy in order to win elections. Our advice is to put public interest above other expectations by accepting the results of elections.” The former President also noted that Zambia has had relatively smooth power conversions since gaining Independence from Britain in 1964, adding that the pre-election environment was conducive for a free and fair election. “I believe that Zambia has served as the leading light and shown good examples over the issue of elections. I am convinced that the people of this country will maintain and retain this exemplary peace during next Thursday’s general elections,” he said. Organizations such as the European Union, African Union and regional bodies have also deployed their contingents to monitor the election. Contest in Zambia is said to be mainly between the ruling Patriotic Front, with Mr. Edgar Lungu and the United Party for National Development, which has Hakainde Hichilema, as it candidate. About 6.6 million Zambians would expect to vote in the elections.
