Benin: pensioners protest under heavy rain

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retired people, furnished with bulletins of different engravings, took their dissents to the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin. Several beneficiaries on Monday challenged the overwhelming precipitation and took to the avenues of Benin, the Edo state capital, to dissent non-installment of unpaid debts of benefits running from 10 to 42 months. A Spokesman of the beneficiaries, Mr Gabriel Osemwenkhai, told newsmen that the retired people in the state had been encountering difficult times over the non-installment of their annuity and tip by the legislature.

He said that a few retired people had kicked the bucket as an aftereffect of hardship. Osemwenkhai said beneficiaries included contained open hirelings, who resigned in 2011 and owed by the state government. The representative charged that the state government had declined to start installment of the benefits with impact from the date of retirement as stipulated in the Civil Service Pension Law. He said that the administration's refusal to hold fast to benefits laws had prompted an overabundance of unfulfilled obligations owed to beneficiaries in Edo. Osemwenkhai said that their issue was further aggravated by the disintegration of the State Pension Board.

"Right now, open hirelings resigning after the disintegration of the Pension Board are again stranded because of government's deferral in handling their retirement papers; over six months after their names have been expelled from the finance. "Instead of making road for retirees to prepare their annuity papers, government has left this class of senior subjects in limbo," he said. The Chairman, NUJ, Edo Council, Mr Roland Osakue, said the union shared the agonies and difficulties of retired people. He engaged the retired people to stay tranquil in their challenge, promising that individuals from the NUJ would utilize their different media outfits to tell the power their situation.
